Biryani and cold coffee — that’s what I’m going to have for today’s lunch! It’s my go-to meal whenever I’m happy. Today, I’ve finally achieved the milestone of 100 followers. It’s not a huge achievement, but considering the time and effort it took, I feel it’s worth celebrating.
What did I expect from Medium?
My Medium account is over a year old. Initially, I rarely published anything on this platform; I was mostly reading stories. But last year, when the Partner Program was introduced in India, I started writing stories here.
At first, I was expecting to publish a few stories, gain 100 followers, and earn my first paycheck within my first month.
By six months? I was expecting to have more than a thousand followers and to be earning $500 a month. This expectation came from reading the success stories of other writers on the platform.
It’s now been almost six months, and I reached 100 followers today. My earnings? But to be fair, I was very inconsistent until December when I finally decided to publish more often.
In December, I had only 10 followers and had published irregularly, with none of my stories getting more than 5 views.
In the last 50 days, however, I’ve published around 25 stories and gained 90 followers. The $10 I earned is also from the last 50 days, during which I got around 500 views and over 200 reads. That’s not a lot of earnings, but I’m still happy because I’ve met and interacted with some wonderful people here.
I have a strong feeling that over the next few months, I’ll build an amazing audience on Medium and start earning a decent amount.
What should you expect?
If you’re a new writer wondering whether you should write on the platform or not, let me tell you — start writing today. But don’t set your hopes too high, like I did. It may take up to six months before you start earning anything, but don’t let that demotivate you.
The best thing about Medium is that you can write about almost anything. Love history and want to share your thoughts? You can. Love the smell of tea and want to write something about it? Go ahead. There are writers and readers for almost every niche.
If you write genuinely and choose clever headlines, you may start seeing results from your very first month. I’ve even seen a few writers whose first stories went viral.
Medium is the best platform I’ve ever encountered as a writer. Even if it keeps paying me pennies, I’ll never leave it.
